France, 1864 (June 14) Bordeaux to San Francisco, Cal., folded letter tied by 1862, 80c rose, horizontal pair tied by "532" dotted lozenge handstamp with matching "Bordeaux, Juin 14, 64" cds, red "6" credit handstamp and "New York Paid 30 Jun. 28" entry cds, light "Fr. Service" in octagon handstamp and Paris transit backstamp; stamps with minor perf flaws, otherwise Very Fine, the only surviving cover from the first Compagnie Generale Transatlantique Line sailing, ex-Winter and Walske, illustrated and reviewed in The Chronicle (#246, page 175).
Scott Nos. 28    Estimate $500 - 750.

This was carried on the maiden voyage of the "Washington", the first sailing of the Compagnie Generale Transatlantique Line. It departed Le Havre on June 15th 1864 and arrived in New York on June 29th (with New York arrival date stamp in error).
