Leavitt Machine, "Boston, Mass. Sep 30, 81", Type X1B, clear strike ties 1¢ blue (182) on blue cover to North Scituate Mass., four visible pin marks from the upper group present, Very Fine, the earliest recorded use.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

The type X1B cancels are associated with pin punctures in two groups of four, with the two groups separated by about 23mm. The canceller is a new design: a combination of a barred oval with a D (the only recorded service letter) and eight short bars. Known from September 30 to December 20, 1881.
