Confederacy, 1860, 5¢ brown, type II, horizontal pair and single, rich deep color, tied by two strikes of "New Orleans, La., Jan 28" cds on 1861 cover to Bordeaux, France, red "New York, Paid 3, Feb 2" exchange cds and ultramarine "Harve, Fevr 17, 61" octagon transit date stamp, French transit and receiving backstamps; couple stamps with a few nibbed perfs not mentioned on certificate, Very Fine, ex-Caspary, H. Baker, Grunin & Sevenoaks; with 1988 P.F. certificate.

A CHOICE AND VERY RARE LOUISIANA INDEPENDENT STATE USAGE TO FRANCE.

This letter was mailed from New Orleans on January 28, 1861, which was two days after Louisiana seceded from the Union. Louisiana joined the Confederacy on Feb 4, 1861.

Very few covers were sent during this short lived period and this is undoubtly a unique Independent States usage to France.
