Providence, R.I., 1846, 5¢ gray black, Pos. 2, touched to large margins, canceled by bold manuscript "V" and tied by light file fold crease on gray 1846 folded letter to Boston Mass., red "Providence R.I., Dec 25" cds and matching "Paid" and "5" rating handstamps, endorsed "Care of Penny Post" at bottom left; some wrinkling, F.-V.F.Scott Nos. 10X1 $7,000.
The Clapp correspondence was found in an old chest by a Swedish antique furniture dealer in Boston. Some of the covers were eventually sold to D. F. Kelleher who sold them to A. B. Slater. Additional covers from this correspondence were later found in the dealer's home before entering the philatelic market.
