Hawaii, 1866, King Kamehameha V, 5¢ blue, tied by target handstamp on cover to Richmond, Ind., in combination with U.S. 1861, 10¢ green (68) canceled by circle of wedges handstamp with matching "San Francisco, Cal., Dec 24" cds and wedge duplex, clear red "Honolulu, U.S. Postage Paid, Dec 10" cds and oval "Hawaiian Steam Service" handstamp, with original enclosure datelined Dec 8th, 1867; cover with small portion of backflap missing, Very Fine and choice, a wonderful steamship service usage with all clear markings, ex-Honolulu Advertiser. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE MIXED-FRANKING COVER WITH THE HAWAIIAN 5¢ KAMEHAMEHA ISSUE, U.S. 1868 10¢ ISSUE AND "HAWAIIAN STEAM SERVICE" OVAL.
The 5¢ stamp paid the internal Hawaiian postage, and the 10¢ stamp paid the Pacific Mail Steamship Company contract mail rate from Hawaii to the U.S. The Honolulu post office occasionally used the "Hawaiian-Islands" datestamp in black instead of the "U.S. Postage Paid" in red when postmarking PMSS Co. contract mail.
