Hawaii - 1860 Clark Die Essays

Lot 1386 E

Hawaii, 1860, 1¢ and 3¢ die essays on thin pale buff card, two of each denomination, different colors, couple with very trivial faint toning, Very Fine.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

In November 1860, the Postmaster General, Alvah K. Clark, wrote to John S. Marsh in Boston to order a new supply of 5¢ Kamehameha III stamps and inquired at the same time about the possibility of obtaining 1¢ and 2¢ stamps for inter-island use to replace the Numerals. Dies in three denominations were prepared and trial proofs were struck from the dies. The new designs were rejected and one year later the lithographed Kamehameha IV stamp was issued.

Realized: $2,400
