Newfoundland, Airmail, 1919, $1 on 15¢ "Trans-Atlantic", without comma after "Post", well centered, vibrant color, tied by "St. Johns, Nfld. Jul 12, 1919" machine cancel on cover to London, England, London (1.7) arrival backstamp; small sealed edge tear at left, some light soiling and stamp with tiny stain, F.-V.F.; with 1968 R.P.S.L. certificate.

ONE OF 20 RECORDED SUPPLEMENTARY MAIL USES SENT JULY 12, 1919 FOR THE SECOND ATTEMPT OF THE MARTINSYDE.

The $1 stamps were also used on 25 pieces of supplementary mail postmarked July 12, 1919 for a second attempt of the Martinsyde. The plane wrecked on takeoff. Its pilot turned over the mail to London officials in January 1920. Covers are backstamped 7 JA 20. A.
