(Sioux City & Pembina Rail Road - Illinois Central Railroad) Ft. Dodge & S. City Agt., Oct 26, route agent cds duplexed with cork cancel on 3¢ green (158) on "Dakota Southern and Sioux City & Pembina Railroads" corner card cover to Mansfield Pa., Very Fine.

The Sioux City & Pembina Rail Road was first contracted from July 1st 1876 for 30 miles between Sioux City and Portlandville at $1,350 a year for a daily service excluding Sundays. The road was absorbed into the Illinois Central Rail Road by 1878 who extended it eastward to Fort Dodge giving a total route distance of 134 miles.

Probably carried eastward from Sioux City on Route 27034 to receiving the Route Agent cds.

(Southern Pacific Railroad) "Terminus 4/26", manuscript railroad postmark on 1¢ postal card (UX5) datelined "Gila Bend 4/25.79" to Tucson, Ariz. Terr., Extremely Fine and choice, Unlisted by Towle.

Construction of the line commenced in 1878 at Yuma and the 248 mile track opened to Tucson in March 1880. No mail contracts were operated until 1883.

Gila Bend, Arizona Territory April 26th 1879 carried from the rail head 128 miles to Tucson, Arizona by stage coach.

(Southern Pacific Railroad) Terminus, Ariz. May 8, 5 P.M., purple duplex with four-rings cancel on 1¢ postal card (UX5) datelined "Maricopa A.T. 5/8. 79" to Tucson, Arizona Territory, Extremely Fine and choice, Rarity IX.

AN ABSOLUTE GEM USE OF THE TERMINUS, ARIZ. RAILROAD MARKING FROM MARICOPA, ARIZONA TERRITORY.

Carried from the rail head at Maricopa 81 miles south to Tucson, Arizona Territory by stage coach.

Sent by David Neahr of Yuma, the freight contractor employed by the railroad constructor to bring materials from the port of Yuma to the rail head. Addressed to Lionel M. Jacob, President of the Pima County Bank instructing payment for materials.

(Train) Per Overland Mail, via Los Angeles, illustrated propaganda design with imprint of McNeil & Dudley of Napa City Locomotive and two passenger cars, on cover bearing 3¢ dull red (26) tied by partial "Napa City, Cal., Feb 1" cds and manuscript "Due 7" rating to Denny, Ill., docketed "Recd March 6/60" at bottom left, original letter accompanies; flap mostly missing but showing Lipman's embossed seal, some soiling and small flaws, F.-V.F. and rare.

Comer card envelope instructing carriage via Butterfield's contract. A number of printers produced these with a steam train image promoting a speedier service by railroad. Total transit between Napa and Denary, IL was 34 days.

(Union Pacific Railroad) Union Pacific R'y, Eastern Division, Mar 16, 1864, oval postmark on cover bearing 3¢ rose (65) tied by circular grid cancel duplexed with partial St. Louis Mo. cds to Leavenworth Kans., original "Union Pacific Railway Company, Eastern Division" letterhead enclosure from Samuel Hallett, President of Union Pacific with some interesting content "…I undertaken to build the Railroad from Leavenworth, and from Wyandotte to Fort Riley, and, I shall do both…", F.-V.F. and important historical railroad document.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

In July 1864, Hallett was shot dead in Wyandotte before the track to Lawrence was opened. The company failed in its aim to control the route to the west coast.

(Union Pacific Railroad) Green Riv. & Ogden R.P.O., Nov 1, purple route agent cds duplex with cork cancel on 3¢ green entire with Wells Fargo & Co. paid frank to Elizabeth, N.J., Nov. 6th arrival backstamp, Very Fine and attractive use.

Although the contract with the Union Pacific Rail Road was between Omaha and Ogden at $320,912 a year for the 1,032 mile Route 34001 of 1873, the route was split into sections for the purposes of the Railway Post Office cars operating on the route. One section was between Ogden and Green River, Wyoming and an R.P.O. datestamp with the wording for this section was used by clerks on the car.

Carried east on the portion of Route 34001 operated by the Ogden to Green River clerks.

Pacific R.R., May 11, bold strike of route agent cds with matching "N" lined fancy cancel on 3¢ pink (U59) buff entire with Wells Fargo printed frank and blue "Wells, Fargo & Co., San Francisco, May 6" oval datestamp to Seabrook N.H.; light stain and wrinkling, Very Fine and choice strike of this rare route agent cds, Rarity IV, The Towle Listing Example.

Nesbitt Die 26 Wells Fargo envelope put onto Route 14834 for Cisco. Stage coach to Ogden and Cheyenne. Put onto Route 14451 at Cheyenne for Omaha and the east. Posted May 11th 1868 when mail car was operating from Cheyenne to Omaha.

(Union Pacific Railroad) Freight Office, Ogden, U.P.R.R., Apr 22 70, blue station agent oval cds on buff cover to Iowa, franked with 3¢ ultramarine (114) tied by manuscript cancel; couple small cover edge flaws at right, otherwise Very Fine, ex-Jarrett.

This was used at the freight office at western terminus of railroad in Ogden, Utah and is the listing example in Towle.
