THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THIS NORTH EASTERN RAILROAD AGENT CDS.
The North Eastern Railroad was chartered December 16th 1851 and constructed largely through the efforts of the City of Charleston. It was completed to Florence S.C. in November 1856, and route agent service commenced in 1858. After the Civil War, different postmarks were used. This letter was addressed to Branchville, where the line divided into two segments to Hamburg and Columbia.
"Chelsea 10th Der 1858" dateline being the plantation of Morton A. Waring located 6½ miles from Monks Comer on Route 6168. Carried 29 miles south to Charleston.

Put onto Route 5604 on May 6th circa 1867 and carried 19 miles north from Charleston to the Mount Holly depot.

(Orange & Alexandria Railroad) Alex & Orange R.R., Apr 20, bold red route agent cds ties 3¢ dull red (11A) large margins to just in including part of adjoining stamp at left, also tied by pencil cancel, on orange buff cover to Philadelphia Pa.; edge wear with corner flaws, Fine and rare, Rarity VIII, ex-Towle, Hannen.Towle No. 302-A-1 Estimate $400 - 600.
The Orange & Alexandria was chartered in March 1848 and reached Gordonsville in March 1854 being contracted for Route 2724 from January 1854. The 88-mile route was given $4,850 a year for a daily service.
Put onto Route 2724 on April 20th circa 1855 and carried to Alexandria for onward carriage via Washington and Baltimore to Philadelphia.

Put onto Route 4404 at Rectortown and carried 17½ miles east to Manassas Junction for transfer to Route 4401 and 27 miles south to Alexandria.
