Patriotic envelope put onto Route 9505 on December 7th 1861 and carried north to Louisville for transfer via Chicago to Aztlan, Wisconsin. Louisville & Nashville Lebanon Branch Railroad operated Route 9505 of 67½ miles once daily for a contract value of $6,750 a year.
General Nathaniel Lyon was the first Union General to fall in the Civil War.

A WONDERFUL SOUTHERN EXPRESS CO. USE WITH AN UNLISTED MISSISSIPPI CENTRAL R.R. STATION OVAL FROM VAIDEN.
The station of Vaiden was located 54 miles north of Canton on the Mississippi Central Railroad. They were contracted for Route 7001 running 235½ miles between Canton and Jackson, Tennessee. Payment was $23,560 a year for a daily service excluding Sundays.
Put into the Vaiden Station on Route 7001 to receive the Station Agent's date stamp (Unlisted by Towle) and carried south to Canton. Transferred to Route 8002 of 206 miles for New Orleans on the New Orleans, Jackson and Great Northern Railroad.
The Southern Express Company was founded during the Confederacy, acted as an express delivery company in both the Southern States and the Mid-West.
