Sound examples of the 1859 Numeral Issue printed in blue are exceedingly rare, due to the delicate nature of the thin paper. The stamp offered here, with wide margins, fresh color and in completely sound condition, is a true condition rarity.

Hawaii, 1863, 1¢ black on grayish, "1" with intact top serif, plate 4-A, type IV, position 4, touched to ample margins, without gum, F.-V.F. and extremely rare variety.Scott No. 15 $650 for normal.
This variety is noted in Westerberg "Plating the Hawaiian Numerals" with only one single and another in a block of 8 being the only recorded examples at that time. Another example was offered in the Advertiser Collection however the variety was not identified. The scarcity of type IV with the top serif indicates that the serif broke off during an early stage in printing.

A RARE TÊTE-BÊCHE PAIR OF THE 1863 1¢ BLACK HAWAIIAN NUMERAL ON GRAYISH PAPER, OF WHICH THIS IS THE ONLY SOUND EXAMPLE.
Besides this gem pair, there exists a block of six with two tête-bêche pairs (both defective), and a strip of three with one tête-bêche pair (crease in gutter between stamps).
