Lot 2163 ()

Hawaii, 1863, 1¢ black on grayish, plate 4-A, type IV, position 4 showing the rare "full serif on 1" variety, without gum, clear margins, deep color, Fine; with 1989 H.P.S. certificate.
Scott No. 15    $650 for normal.

This variety is noted in Westerberg "Plating the Hawaiian Numerals" with only one single and another in a block of 8 being the only recorded examples at that time. Another example was offered in the Advertiser Collection however the variety was not identified. The scarcity of type IV with the top serif indicates that the serif broke off during an early stage in printing.
