Sticker, multicolor die-cut label with Adapremont imprint, affixed on homemade brown cover bearing 5¢ blue (7) vertical pair tied by manuscript squiggles, matching "Manchester S.C. Feb. 7th 1863" postmark to Capt. John McGrady, c.s. Engineer Office, Savannah Ga., Very Fine.

Confederacy, Captured Union Patriotic, flaps with red and blue edging and "Union and Constitution" flap embossing showing Eagle and Shield design on cover bearing C.S.A. 5¢ light blue (6), three large margins, tied by Army of Northern Virginia 7-bar grid in circle cancel (ANV-01) to Lexington Va.; reduced at right, otherwise Very Fine and rare captured Union patriotic use.

Lot 2038    

Confederacy, (Captured Union Patriotic Cover) Washington Mounted on Horse (Walcott No. 67), blue Patriotic design on 1862 cover with balloon type cds of "Corinth, Miss., Apr. 10" on reverse and manuscript "Due 5" rating to Memphis, Tenn., Memphis "Due 5" handstamp on face, magenta Soldier's endorsement "Soldier's Letter, L.S. Lake, Co C. 13th Regiment, Tenn. Vols." at top; cover silked on the inside and lightly cleaned, handsome Very Fine appearance, ex-Everett (Pictured in Monroe Book, pg. 30).
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

The sender has crossed out the "Union" inscription at the bottom of design, to make clear his Southern sentiments and has added at top left of design the manuscript notation "Taken From Yankees".

Private L.S. Lake of the 13th Tennessee, had just fought at the Battle of Shiloh (April 6-7), in which the regiment sustained 137 casualties, which might be one of the reasons why he deserted his unit at Corinth on April 25, 1862. He returned to his regiment, but again deserted at Shellyville, Tenn. on May 10, 1862.

Oct 8" cds with matching "Due" and circled "10" rating handstamps to Dayton Va., soldier's endorsement "John Haney Private, Company D, 10 Regt. Va. Vols." at left; slight soiling and minor edge wear, Very Fine and scarce.
