Witherspoon, Camp Pemberton, Pocotaligo S.C., group of four covers including 5¢ green (1) tied by "Charleston S.C." cds; 5¢ green (1) tied by grid cancel, matching "Yorkville S.C. Feb 27" cds; 5¢ blue (4) tied by "Yorkville S.c. Apr 15" cds; and stampless brown cover carried by slave endorsed "By boy Dan" at bottom left, F.-V.F. correspondence group.

Forwarded Covers, group of 5 mailed from Pocotaligo (4) or Charleston (1) bearing 5¢ green (1) tied by cds to Camden S.C. and apparently forwarded to Liberty Hill S.C. with additional 5¢ green (1), each pen cancelled or tied by red Camden cds, only one cover from the correspondence with Liberty Hill noted; some faults, F.-V.F. and unusual forwarded group.

Confederacy, Charleston S.C., two soldier covers endorsed from "Private T.A. H, W.L. I. Eutaw Regt." to Charleston, one with letter datelined "Secessionville, Wednesday May 20th /63" with Charleston "10" and "2" rating handstamps; second cover only with Charleston "2" drop rating handstamp; unusual pair of letters apparently privately carried into Charleston and dropped in the mails; the letter with some interesting content concerning taking a steamer from Charleston to the Islands to meet and visit, mentions the Regiment is planning parties and "several Regatta Clubs started in the Regiment under the patronage of Col…Fred is afraid to run the blockade and cannot tell when his regular time will come for furlough…", Very Fine and scarce pair of 2¢ drop letters.

H, W.L. I. Eutaw Regt." at top left, letter mentions missing morning inspections and guard duty today would be fun with such intense heat, wants key to house for visiting in addressee's absent and sending of money, Very Fine and scarce rerated 2¢ prepaid drop use.

Locomotive Shops, Raleigh N.C." imprint cover (WD-QM-34) with imprint crossed out as private use to Salisbury N.C., original part-printed "Freight Receipt Charlotte and So. Ca. R.R." 1864 enclosure, Very Fine and unusual use with railroad receipt.

Lot 1915    

Confederacy, Columbia S.C., Jul 15 (Battle of Sessionville), blue cds ties 10¢ blue (12), full to large margins, on orange cover to Cordesville S.C., endorsed via "Strawberry Ferry" at bottom left, reverse with note "July 16th, Gave John his letter this morning, Genl. Hagood attacked the Yankees on James Island this morning and drove them to their boats. Among the prisoners are 30 contraband. The Eutaws were in the fight. The W L I (Washington Light Infantry) have two men wounded, only five of the Regt. wounded -" that apparently describes military action during the Battle of Secessionville on James Island near Charleston; docketing at top also ties 10¢, Fine.

The Battle of Secessionville (or the First Battle of James Island) was fought on June 16, 1862, during the American Civil War. Confederate forces defeated the Union's only attempt to capture Charleston, South Carolina, by land.
