Eagle and Shield with State Stars embellished "Union for Ever", red and blue patriotic design with manuscript embellishment in shield, on cover bearing 3¢ rose (65) tied by "Newton N.J., Apr 11" cds to Stillwater N.J.; reduced slightly at left, F.-V.F., Bischel 4349.

Eagle with CSA and US Flags, red and blue Wells patriotic design on cover bearing 3¢ rose (65) tied by grid cancel and Sep 16th 1862 cds to Butler Oh.; reduced at right, F.-V.F (photo on web site).

Lot 1858    

Eagle, Shield and Flags, red and blue patriotic design on cover bearing 3¢ rose (65) tied by "Little Falls MT, Dec 11" cds to Cannon Falls, Minn., accompanied by enclosed patriotic lettersheet with blind embossed flag and edged in red and blue datelined "Little Falls, December the 10th 1862" written by soldier Edward Thomas who had marched with his company from Fort Snelling to Little Falls, the Army was still pursuing the Indians following the Sioux Uprising of August 1862. He writes about the hardship of winter travel by foot: "I slept in the barne every night but three - we crawled into the hay like a parcel
of pigs - the Captain had to bunk with the mules - the corporals and some of the high privats slept in the House…
", the writer died near Fort Rice, Dakota Terr. on Sept. 11, 1864; cover edge wear and reduced a bit at right, 3¢ affected by edge placement, F.-V.F., ex-Risvold.

"Excelsior" Flag, blue patriotic design on cover to "Holsey R. Whallon" in Fairfax, Vt., franked with 1857, 3¢ dull red tied by fancy Elaborate Button handstamp (S-E GE-E 24) with matching "Whallonsburgh, N.Y., Jul 8" balloon type cds, 1861 docketing on reverse; cover missing part of upper right corner from opening, otherwise Very Fine, a very rare fancy cancel on a patriotic cover.
