On Aug. 28, 1883 a patent was granted to John J. Williamson for a money order postal card for use in transmitting small sums of money by mail. The idea was not adopted as it fell under the Act of March 3, 1879 forbidding the use of any patented postal card and prohibiting the payment of royalties.

Brooks, New York, Postal Tag Essay, 1¢ Brown on Light Buff, Second design on larger 147 x 72½mm dull v. pale o-yellow card with beveled corners on left, hole at left, eyelet and reinforcing fiber, stamp and inscriptions same as first design except with all printing set further to the right owing to larger size, Very Fine.USPCC No. PT2 $750.

Brooks, New York, Postal Tag Essay, 1¢ Brown on Light Buff, Fourth design on 148 x 74mm dull v. pale o-yellow card folded at right, all four corners beveled, so that, on folding, the bevels coincide, a 3½ mm hole at the left on the front half coincides with a similar hole in the rear card. No eyelet or reinforcing fiber around hole on either half. The printing on the face half of this variety is very similar to that shown on PT-2 with exception there has been an additional line of type added across the bottom portion of the card reading "Detach Postal Tag Card and Write Your Order Thereon" in block letters, Very Fine.USPCC No. PT4 $750.
