Lot 4161 S   

1885, 1¢ Brown on Buff, Production Ink Sample, issued card with red manuscript "#5" in upper left, marked on face in black manuscript "Current printing Octo= 14/85" together with capital "A " in lower left corner, Very Fine and unique. Scott No. UX8PS.
USPCC No. S7PSd    $600.

This card was part of the production samples sent to the Postmaster General on October 15, 1885 that included #1 Morrill's, #2 Wode's 1, #3 Wode's 2, #4 Johnson's and this card #5 "Current Printing". Much difficulty was encountered with the ink used in producing this issue of cards, all of which had a tendency to clog the fine lines of the design and blur the finished product, thus requiring far too frequent washing of the plates. Brown was discontinued after only fifteen months.

Postal Card, 1885, 1¢ brown on buff, Production Strength Sample, card with violet "Postal Card Agency, Castleton, N.Y., Feb 5 1886" three-line handstamp and with 70mm diameter strength testing circle broken and pencil "74" on face for pounds of pressure at bursting point, Very Fine. Scott No. UX8PS.

The strength testing cards are also known with "55" and "77" pounds of pressure at bursting point.

Postal Card, 1885, 1¢ chocolate on pinkish buff, Die Proof, typographed die proof on 130 x 76mm thick pinkish buff card (.0225") with red manuscript "Specimen" at center, remarkably detailed impression, fresh and Very Fine. Scott No. UX8P.

THE ONLY RECORDED CHOCOLATE DIE PROOF OF THE 1885 1¢ POSTAL CARD ISSUE.

The stamp design was B.E.P. miscellaneous die no. 2972 engraved by Lorenzo J. Hatch in June 1885. The inscription is B.E.P. miscellaneous die no. 2974 engraved by David M. Cooper in June 1885. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing used transfer rolls made from the stamp and inscription dies to make the 124 single subject steel postal card plates for the contractor.
