Confederacy, 7-Star Flag, red and blue patriotic design (F7-29) on cover to Applewood Va., "Richmond, Va., Jun. 29, 1861" cds and "Paid 5" in circle rate handstamp, with sender's pen caricature of a turtle holding up the flag and "In Haste" notation in flag; missing most of backflap and small edge mend at top, otherwise Very Fine.

Confederacy, 8-Star Flag, red and blue design on cover to Lafayette, Va., "Winchester, Va., May 22, 1861" cds with matching rare "Paid 3" handstamp; slight toning and a couple small cover tears at top, F.-V.F., a very rare of the Winchester, Va. "Paid 3" handstamp on a patriotic cover.
C.S.A. Catalog No. F8-5; $1,500    Estimate $750 - 1,000.

Winchester was out of stamps and used the "Paid 3" as Confederate use of the U.S. rate prior to the assumption of control by the Confederate Post Office on June 1, 1861.

Confederacy, 10-Star and Bars Flag and Cannon, patriotic design in blue with "Stand firmly by your cannon" slogan below, on orange cover with scarce large "Union City, Tennessee" negative circle postmark and matching "Paid 5" rating handstamp to Cotton Grove Tenn., original enclosed letter headed "Camp Brown, Aug. 11" and reads in part "…I would have answered your letter before now but I took the measles a few days after I recd yours while at Humboldt…We are about through with the measles but only 1 of nearly 300 so far we have had only 3 deaths in our Regt yet that is very good I think…we were called out about 12 oclock ordered to be in line in 5 min They kept us about an hour and were sent back to camp with orders to be on our arms well we did not more than get sleep before we were roused again with orders to have our guns loaded and in line double quick time … our line was about as long again as it is on drill … we would have been sent to Missouri had it not been for so many measles…"; some edge faults and large tear, Fine and rare use.
