1908, 2¢ carmine, imperf, vertical coil, foreign entry (design of 1¢), middle stamp on vertical strip of 7 with plate no. "5299" and hollow 5-point star in top margin, o.g., never hinged, rich deep color, F.-V.F. Scott No. 344V $5,000.
ONE OF THE FEW NEVER HINGED EXAMPLES OF THE 1908 2¢ IMPERFORATE VERTICAL COIL WITH THE RARE 1¢ FOREIGN ENTRY VARIETY.
This variety was caused when the 1908 1¢ Franklin die transfer roll was used on one position of plate 5299. The error was caught before use of the plate and the 1¢ entry was burnished out partially leaving traces of the hairs in Franklin's head and "One Cent"in the new 2¢ entry.
