Hamb. Pkt., 15 or 24 U.S. Notes, Jul 16" depreciated currency cds, Very Fine, ex-Hugh Feldman.

1866 (Oct. 17) London, England to Charleston, S.C., datelined folded letter with London (10.27) cds and matching "38 / Cents" double-weight debit handstamp to U.S., manuscript rating crossed out, carried by Cunard Line Java from Queenstown Oct. 28th to Boston Nov. 7th, partial "Boston Br. Pkt. '48' Nov 7" exchange debit cds, matching bold "In U.S. Notes / 67" circular depreciated currency marking; minor tape staining, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Letter was double rate and required 2x 24¢ = 48¢ postage due if paid in coin, or 67¢ in depreciated currency.

1868 (Sep. 21) Arroyo, Puerto Rico to New York, N.Y. via St. Thomas, folded letter datelined "Arroyo 7th Sept. 1868" and endorsed "via St. Ths.", entered mails with "St. Thomas, 14 / 9 1868" transit cds, carried on US Brazil Line Mississippi from St. Thomas Sep. 14th to New York arriving Sep. 21st, 10¢ green, E. grill, clear grill impression, tied on arrival by "New-York, Sep 21" cds, Very Fine.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

1867 (Apr. 1, Nov. 18) London, England to New York, N.Y., two folded letter sheets from the Lanman & Kemp correspondence, both sent unpaid with London "3/Cents" debit handstamps to the U.S., and both carried by the North German Lloyd from Southampton to New York, first with by NGL Line Deutschland arriving Apr. 13th, "N.Y. Am. Pkt. '24 or 32 U.S. Notes' Apr 14" exchange cds, other carried by NGL Line Weser arriving Nov. 28th with "N.Y. Am. Pkt. '24 or 33 U.S. Notes' Nov 29" exchange cds, Very Fine and scarce pair of depreciated currency cds, ex-Colin Tabeart on his exhibit page.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

1867 (Jun. 13) Bowensburgh, Ill. to Dublin, Ireland, orange cover bearing 10¢ green (68) vertical pair, guideline s.e. at right, tied by target cancels, matching "Bowensburgh, Ill. Jun 13" cds, partial "Boston Br. Pkt. '5' Jun 18" exchange cds with matching "Short Paid" framed handstamp and sent as an unpaid letter, carried on Cunard Line Cuba departing Boston Jun. 19th to Queenstown arriving Jun. 27th, Dublin (6.28) arrival cds and "1/-" due handstamp; small backflap fault., Very Fine and attractive example of short paid treatment under the 1848 treaty.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

The 1848 treaty did not allow part-paid letters, and stipulated that they would be treated as unpaid.

1867 (Jul. 26) Urknaa, Sweden to Lafayette, Ind., gray cover with "Urknaa, 26/7" origin cds, blue manuscript "Via Prussia & Ostende" and "2½" rating, black "Aachen, 3/8, Cts." cds and framed "Aus Schweden / per Stralsund" handstamp, additional blue manuscript "5" debit rating on reverse, carried by Inman Line City of Paris from Liverpool Aug. 7th to New York arriving Aug. 17th, black "New.York, Am. Packet., Aug 17" cds, F.-V.F., A rare use of the "Aus Schweden" framed handstamp on incoming U.S.-Prussian treaty mail.

1867 (Nov. 14) Detroit, Mich. to London, England, red "Detroit Am. Pkt. '3 Paid' Nov 14" exchange cds on cover bearing 24¢ lilac (78) tied by small grid cancel, carried on Allan Line Peruvian from Quebec Nov. 16th to Londonderry arriving Nov. 25th, red London Paid (11.27) arrival cds, Very Fine and scarce Detroit exchange office use., ex-Littauer.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

The Allan line sailed from Quebec or Portland to Liverpool via Londonderry. Portland, Chicago or Detroit were designated as the United States exchange office.

1868-69 (circa) New York, N.Y. to Paris, France, newspaper wrapper to the Paris Publisher of the newspaper La Presse Libre, bearing 1¢ pale blue, F. grill (92) horizontal pair, tied by quartered corks, prepaying the 2¢ printed matter rate, French red "15c" centimes due handstamp, Very Fine, ex-Winter.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED 1¢ F. GRILL WRAPPER TO FRANCE.

Since the earliest recorded use of the 1¢ F. grill is late October 1868, this wrapper was probably a late 1868 or early 1869 usage.
