1857 (Jul. 10) Madison, Ind. to Port Stewart, Ireland, cover with "Madison Ind. Jul 10" cds, black "N. York Br. Pkt. '5' Jul 14" debit exchange cds, carried by Cunard Line Niagara from Boston Jul. 15th to Liverpool arriving Jul. 26th, Dublin "American Mail, JY27 1857" rimless cds with attached "1/" shilling due rating, Coleraine (7.27) arrival backstamp, Very Fine, ex-Winter.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

AN UNCOMMON EXAMPLE OF THE DUBLIN "AMERICAN MAIL" MARKING WITH ATTACHED RATE.

In January 1856, London authorized Dublin to mark rates on Irish mail when there was insufficient time to do so in Liverpool.

1857, 1858 South America to Liverpool, England, two folded letters with dotted Liverpool double-arc datestamps, 1857 with Demerara (8.25) and London (9.14) backstamps, Liverpool (9.14) arrival cds, manuscript "2/-" shilling due rating for double packet rate, 1858 with Rio de Janeiro (5.14) and London (6.13) backstamps, Liverpool (6.14) arrival cds, manuscript "1/-" shilling due rating for single packet rate, a Very Fine pair at the single and double packet rates.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

In 1857, the Liverpool head post office introduced experimental handstamps incorporating pins, this marking had just two arcs set in pin dots to minimize the amount of damage to the actual letters, it was used on incoming mail from South America during the period of 1857-58.

1858 (Sep. 29) Paris, France to Taylorsville, Tenn., cover bearing France 80c lake (19), four full to large margins, tied by grid cancel, matching "Paris, 29 Sept. 58" cds, red "P.D." and red "Br. Service" framed handstamps, carried by Cunard Line Africa from Liverpool Oct. 2nd to New York arriving Oct. 14th, red "New York 'Paid 15' Oct 15" exchange cds; couple cover tears, Fine.

1858 (Jul. 2) Mexico to New York via Havana & Charleston, datelined folded letter from the Lanman & Kemp correspondence with blue unlisted "Gabriel Lopez Martinez y Ca, Habana" forwarders oval struck on flap, carried by Isabel from Havana July 10th to Charleston arriving July 12th, docketed as received July 16th, Very Fine and rare marking.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE CHARLESTON "STEAMSHIP 20" RATING CIRCULAR HANDSTAMP.

This cover is illustrated and discussed in Wierenga's Incoming Steamship Mail on pp. 185-86, fig. 249. The other recorded cover is an apparently triple weight cover as it also bears a "Steamship 10" circular handstamp that was not crossed out.

1858 (Aug. 9) New York, N.Y. to Plymouth, England, datelined folded letter sent unpaid with "N. York Br. Pkt. '5' Aug 10" debit exchange cds to G.B., carried on Cunard Line Europa from Boston Aug. 11th, she collided with Arabia near Cape Race and put into St. John's, Newfoundland for repairs, mail and passengers were picked up at Halifax by Cunard Line Persia that arrived at Liverpool on Aug. 28th, Liverpool America (8.28) backstamp and matching "1/-" due handstamp, Plymouth (8.29) arrival cds, F.-V.F., ex-Graham Booth.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

1858 (Sep. 3) New Orleans, La. to Marseilles, France, datelined folded letter bearing 5¢ red brown (28) and 10¢ green, type II (32), tied by "New Orleans, La. Sep 3, 1858" cds paying the 15¢ treaty rate, red "New York, Paid 3, Sep 11" exchange credit cds to France for inland, carried on Vanderbilt Line North Star from New York Sep 11th to Le Havre arriving Sep. 25th, Le Havre (9.25) entry datestamp noting American service direct to France, two strikes of red "PD" framed handstamp in red, backstamped on the railway post offices from Le Havre to Paris, Paris to Lyon, and Lyon to Marseilles, Very Fine and rare; with 2002 P.S.E. certificate.

Jan 27" cds and red New York exchange office "19" credit handstamp to G.B, carried by Cunard Line Europa from New York Feb. 2nd to Liverpool arriving Feb. 14th, red "Paid, Liverpool, Br. Packet, 14FE59" cds, blue-green "Green Island / Belfast" handstamp and matching Belfast (2.16) arrival backstamp, Extremely Fine and choice.

1859 (Feb. 18) Camp Floyd, Utah Territory to Dublin, Ireland, choice strike of rimless "Camp Floyd, U.T., February 18" cds and matching "Paid 3" in arc overwritten with manuscript "24" rating at upper right on buff cover to Dublin, Ireland, New York reddish black "19" credit handstamp, carried by Cunard Line Asia from New York Mar. 30th to Liverpool arriving Apr. 10th, sharp strike of "America, Paid, Dublin, AP 11 1859" (Robertson P1) arrival datestamp for late mail closed bag from Liverpool; vertical file fold at left, Very Fine and choice.

AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE CAMP FLOYD UTAH TERRITORIAL TRANSATLANTIC USE WITH A CHOICE STRIKE OF THE RIMLESS POSTMARK.

The letter likely traveled East from Camp Floyd by stage or horse via the Salt Lake City to St. Joseph route, where it then went to New York by rail. It left New York Mar. 30th on the Cunard Line "Asia", arriving at Liverpool Apr. 10th. From there, it went by rail to Holyhead, across the Irish Sea by boat, to Dublin.
