Mexico, 1864, Eagle (3rd Period), 2r orange, Mazatlan, cons 236-1864, tied by Mazatlan box datestamp (Schatzkes 739) on 1865 folded letter to Guanajuato, cover went by ship to French controlled Acapulco or Manzanillo, then inland to destination, manuscript "P Calypso" ship endorsement was necessary; file fold affecting stamp, Very Fine.

The land road was not French controlled. A French military column had marched from Durango to Mazatlan in January, but towns like La Noria, Concordia, Villa Union and El Rosario had to be re-taken afterward.

A UNIQUE EXAMPLE OF THE VILLA UNION CANCELLATION ON THE 1864-66 EAGLE ISSUE.

French military columns passed through Villa Union, but never became resident there, likely staying no more than a few days at a time. Villa Union is an easy day trip from Mazatlan.
