(Spanish-American War) Mil. Sta. No. 1 Manila, Phil. Isl'ds. Mar 19 '1900, duplex ties Philippines 2¢ red (214) on cover to Somerville Mass., purple "G.H. Bodge. H,C." straightline handstamp and endorsed "Soldier's Mail.", Boston Somerville Station (5.2) machine arrival backstamp, original enclosed letter datelined "Military Hospital #3, March 17, 1900" with some interesting content on camp life, New Years Celebration, Filipino Men and Women and the Chinese merchants which do most of the business there including Opium, reading in part: "On visiting Paco cemetary where Lawton's body lay, many of our boys are still laying there. Caskets are placed in niches of walls, built the slope of circles. Peculiar trees, smoothe bark, with many large clusters of sweet yellow flowers, without leaves, grow between 1st & second walls. A Chapel in the center. I saw where 204 soldiers had been intered. Some had good and large marble slabs. A red tile with the number scratched on them marked the resting place of many…" and signed "From a Somerville Boy in the Orient, George H. Bodge, Hospital Crops", Very Fine.

Lyon, Received, 2nd Lieut. 16th Infy, "11-26-00, Echaque", purple double-circle handstamp on cover bearing 2¢ red (279B) tied by "Detroit, Mich Sep 17 1900" duplex to soldier at Manila, Philippines, docketed as answered Salano, December 12' 1900", Very Fine and scarce incoming use, transit time of over 3 months, ex-Hahn.

Lot 172    

Spanish-American War Collection, better group of 40 covers, nearly all are soldier letters, many with Soldier Letter Chaplain handstamps, nice range of Cuba, Puerto Rico and Philippines originations, many with patriotic designs including flags or other styles, variety of stamp issues including Postage Dues, few in the immediate post-War period with U.S. Possessions stamps, mixed condition with flaws to be expected, overall a Fine and desirable group of Spanish American War covers, an excellent collection with many better covers.
Estimate    $3,000 - 4,000.
