The 30¢ in postage overpays the 26¢ fourth progression rate to France for 20-30 grams. The sender was apparently confused as the rates jump from 26¢ to 36¢. Illustrated in Weiss NYFM on page 382.

The earliest of 12 recorded GE-S1 covers recorded by Weiss with a period of use from October 16, 1872 to March 2, 1873. Carried on the Guion Line "Nevada" that departed New York on October 16, 1872 and arrived at Queenstown on October 28, 1872.

Eight-Point Star Geometric, beautiful sharp strike cancels 1¢ postal card (UX3) to Hamburg, Germany, red "New York Aug 29" exchange cds, Hamburg (2.9.1874) arrival cds, this card was underpaid 1¢ for the 2¢ postal card rate to Germany but was perhaps accepted as printed matter even with a neatly handwritten message, an unusual use, Extremely Fine and superb strike.
