Adams & Co., Auburn, Express, blue starburst handstamp (ADA-102a) on cover to the Marshall of Sacramento, Cal.; small piece of bottom flap missing, Very Fine, with only three examples are recorded from the town of Auburn, one is recorded on a small oval while the other two are found on this type of oval.

Adams & Co., Sacramento, Express, bold red stylized rope oval handstamp with matching red "Paid" straight line on blue 1851 folded letter to San Francisco, Cal., with December 19th letter regarding the state of the whiskey market, an Extremely Fine strike, quite possibly the earliest known Adam's cover with the current finest collection of Adams not having a cover prior to July 1, 1851.

Adams & Co., San Francisco, Jun 24, blue double circle handstamp (ADA-1000) on 1854 folded letter to San Francisco, sent from George Derley in San Diego dealing with the purchase of the rancho Santa Margarita de los Peñasquitas…There is a beautiful little rancho near here called Peñasquitas which I can buy cheap, letter carried by Adams from San Diego to San Francisco with handstamp applied to letter when it reached San Francisco, manuscript "Adams & Co. Express - Please Deliver" at lower left, Very Fine.

Adams & Co. Express, Southern Coast., large red circular handstamp (ADA-107) on folded letter dated "May 11, 1854" and addressed to San Francisco dealing with timber on unfinished wharf at San Diego, manuscript "due 25 cts" pencil express and "per Str Southerner" ship endorsement; file folds and some light toning, otherwise Very Fine.
Estimate    $2,000 - 3,000.

THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS EXTREMELY RARE SOUTHERN COAST HANDSTAMP IN RED - TWO OTHER EXAMPLES ARE IN BLUE WITH ONE RESIDING IN THE WILTSEE COLLECTION.

The Steamer Southerner was first outfitted for the Law's Line as the Steamer Isthmus (500 tones) and first arrived in San Francisco on May 9, 1850. The Isthmus was acquired by The Pacific Mail Line, renamed Southerner and in 1854 was operating between San Diego and San Francisco. She was lost on January 17, 1855 after striking a sand bar at the mouth of the Columbia River.

Alta Express Co., Paid, fancy company frank in black on 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire to San Francisco with manuscript endorsement "With $140 Gold Dust", flap with colorless embossed corner card of Grocer in Georgia Slide, Cal. (a mining area near Georgetown); cover with light vertical fold & light soiling, F.-V.F.

Alta Express Co., Paid, black company printed frank (Haller FA3 type 2) on 1853-55 3¢ Nesbitt entire to San Francisco with manuscript "Greenwood, Sep 21" (El Dorado) (note: this is not a Post Office marking since no state or year); most of backflap missing, Very Fine, a rare usage, one of two manuscript Greenwood origin notations recorded, ex-Tatham.

Alta Express Co., Forest Hill, full bold red oval handstamp on fresh 1853 3¢ red on buff entire to Todds Valley, Cal., black company frank with small "Paid"; trimmed at left, otherwise Very Fine, a choice example of the Forest Hill handstamp.
