(Retaliatory Rates) 1848 (Nov. 28) Antwerp, Belgium to Castine Me., blue folded letter with red "Antwerp, 29 Nov, 1848" cds and small "PD" framed handstamp with manuscript "3/4" rating, red London (11.30) and Liverpool (12.1) transits, carried by Cunard Line Niagara from Liverpool Dec. 2nd to Boston arriving Dec. 16rg, red "Boston Ms Dec 16" cds and matching "34" handstamp updated "58" cent rating handstamp, Very Fine, This was the last westbound sailing to Boston during the retaliatory period and the latest recorded use of the Boston "58" cent rating handstamp.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

This cover was prepaid double the 1s10d G.B.-Belgium through rate per Treaty of 1844. Boston due rating of 58¢ for double the 5¢ letter for under 300 miles plus double the 24¢ retaliatory packet fee.

(Retaliatory Rates) 1848 (Dec. 1) Manchester, England to Philadelphia Pa., folded letter with red "Manchester, DE 1, 1848" cds and red manuscript "1/-" shilling packet rating, Liverpool (12.2) backstamp, carried as endorsed by Cunard Line Niagara from Liverpool Dec. 2nd to Boston arriving Dec. 16th, red "Boston Ms. 'Ship' Dec 16" cds with matching "34" cent retaliatory rating handstamp, Very Fine, This was the final voyage into Boston under the retaliatory rate period.

(Retaliatory Rates) 1848 (Dec. 8) London, England to Philadelphia Pa., folded letter bearing G.B. 2d blue, strip of four, margins to touched, tied by "12" oval grid cancels, London (12.8) backstamp and red "Ship-Letter, London, DE 8, 1848" cds on front, endorsed "per Private Ship", black "Ship-Letter, Liverpool, Dec 10" crown cds on backstamp, Philadelphia blue "6" cent due octagonal handstamp; couple tone spots, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

Cover was prepaid 8 pence for the outbound ship letter rate and was 6¢ postage due in Philadelphia for the ship letter rate to port of arrival.
