1771 (Feb. 6) London, England to Philadelphia Pa., docketed folded cover with London "6/FE" Bishop mark backstamp and manuscript "2N" rating for double the 1s packet fee, carried by Falmouth Packet Mercury from Falmouth Feb. 18th to New York arriving Apr. 30th, reverse with "New York" two-line postmark and matching "30 AP" Franklin mark with magenta "12" dwt rating for inland postage, Philadelphia "5/2" 5s2d local currency due rating; horizontal fold toning, Fine, a scarce double rate Falmouth packet use.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

New York rated the cover 12 dwt inland postage due, which was equivalent to 36d. Philadelphia local currency was 36d x 1.67 = 60d plus a 2d local delivery fee totallying 5s2d.

1772 (Dec. 5) Norwich, England to Philadelphia Pa., folded cover with "NORWICH" straightline with manuscript "Pd. 1/4" 1s4d rating, London "POST/PAID" circled handstamp with red manuscript "p. 1/4" restatement, carried as endorsed by Falmouth packet Duke of Cumberland from Falmouth Dec. 25th to New York arriving Feb. 7th, New York red "2" inland postage due rating, Philadelphia red ms. "1/-" 1s local currency due rating (6d (2x 3dwt) inland plus 1d delivery x 1.67 = 12d); light cover toning, F.-V.F.

(Revolutionary War) 1775 (May 2) London, England to Philadelphia Pa., docketed folded cover endorsed "p. Dolphin, Capt. Read" at bottom left, Brig. Dolphin arrived at Philadelphia on Jul. 8th from Kingston, Jamaica; internal separation including top flap, F.-V.F., This cover was sent just after hostilities with the American Colonies on April 19th 1775, but prior to the partial blockade starting in Sep. 1775.
Estimate    $100 - 150.

Sailing ships would often take a southerly route carrying cargo to the Caribbean, then ride the Gulf stream.

(Revolutionary War) 1780 (Jul. 28) Savannah Ga. to North Britain, folded letter from a sailor recently arrived at Savannah, carried transatlantic possibly by warship, partial "Portsmouth / Ship Lre" two-line handstamp and manuscript rating, crossed out and updated to "In All 10", London "11/OC" bishop mark; address faded, some wear and cover tear, Fine.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

(Revolutionary War) 1781 (c., Dec. 6) London, England to New York N.Y., folded letter from John Drummond to Daniel Goddard with London "6/DE" bishop mark backstamp and manuscript "2N" shilling rating, probably carried by Falmouth packet Sandwich departing Jan. 15th 1782 to New York arriving Mar. 5th, with news "We have heard by way of France of the Surrender of Lord Cornwallis", signed on address leaf John Drummond, silked on inside due to fold separations, accompanied by additional Revolutionary War letter datelined "London Jun 27. 1775" t0 America with additional manuscript "Exd" and referring to the war as our "civil war", some fold separation, Fine, An interesting pair of Revolutionary war items.
