Nevada, Washington & Omega Express, black printed frank (NEW-001) on 1870, 3¢ green entire (U82) addressed to San Jose, Cal., with blue "Wells Fargo & Co., Nevada, Cal." date stamp applied across indicia indicating Wells Fargo carried it from Nevada City to San Jose, Extremely Fine, very rare with Only Three Examples of This Very Rare Express Are Known on two very similar frank types, this being the best example of the type 1 frank recorded. Pacific Express Co., Gold Hill, blue oval handstamp (PAC-103) with "May 4" manuscript date plus "Paid" manuscript notation on 1853-55 3¢ Nesbitt entire to San Francisco, also with "Pacific Express Co., Placerville" red double-lined oval handstamp (PAC-103a) and "Paid" red box handstamp as frank, envelope evidently sold in Placerville but sent from Gold Hill, Very Fine, used at Gold Hill which is located about five miles northeast of Placerville and carried to San Francisco, the U.S. Post Office never had an office at Gold Hill, two examples of the very rare Gold Hill mark are known - one in red and this example in blue, the Placerville is equally rare with this being the only recorded example. Estimate $400 - 600.
