Jun 3 1861" 32mm cds and neat complete matching strikes of the "Paid" and "5" rating handstamps to Col. Andrew P. Calhoun at Pendleton S.C., small bit of flap missing, ex-Kohn; second with "Charleston S.C. Jun 3 1861" 26mm double-circle datestamp and matching strikes of "Paid" and "5" rating handstamps to Mount Carmel S.C., additional "Paid 5 cts" sender's endorsement, a Very Fine and rare exhibit pair.

June 3rd 1861 is the earliest recorded use of this Pre-War markings after C.S.A. postal operations began.

Charleston did not have a "15" cent rating handstamp. This is the earliest recorded wartime Charleston charge account letter, and the only "Paid 15" example.

Lee, Rebel Troops" at upper left, unusual sequence of rate markings including Charleston "Paid 10" circled rate handstamp (CSA type G) overstruck with bold large "10" due rating handstamp (CSA type K), small red "10" rating handstamp cross out in pencil and red crayon "2" at bottom, Jan. 1863 answer docketing at left, reverse with ½" x 1" rectangular mucilage stain over backflaps possibly from an express label, Very Fine, ex-Emerson, Everett.

Hoyt" at bottom left, reverse with 10¢ blue (11), four large margins, faulty, tied by extra ms. ink; reduced at left, F.-V.F.; signed by Dietz on reverse.

The Charleston Post Office apparently did not recognize the franking on reverse and rated postage due in error.
