1858 (Jul. 2) Mexico to New York via Havana & Charleston, datelined folded letter from the Lanman & Kemp correspondence with blue unlisted "Gabriel Lopez Martinez y Ca, Habana" forwarders oval struck on flap, carried by Isabel from Havana July 10th to Charleston arriving July 12th, docketed as received July 16th, Very Fine and rare marking.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE CHARLESTON "STEAMSHIP 20" RATING CIRCULAR HANDSTAMP.

This cover is illustrated and discussed in Wierenga's Incoming Steamship Mail on pp. 185-86, fig. 249. The other recorded cover is an apparently triple weight cover as it also bears a "Steamship 10" circular handstamp that was not crossed out.
