1850 (Jun. 10) Panama to Charleston S.C., buff cover with remarkable strike of "Panama N.Y. Jun 10" cds of U.S. Mail Despatch Agent at Panama, on cover to S.C., bold strike of red "New Orleans La June 24" cds and matching "Steam" straightline and "30" in circle rating handstamps, forwarded with red "Charleston S.C. '5' Ju1 3" cds to Monticello S.C.; small seal stain, Very Fine and choice strike, ex-DeVoss, Alexander, Kramer.

THE EARLIEST AND ONE OF THE FINEST OF ONLY 12 RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE U.S. CONSULAR OFFICE AT PANAMA POSTMARK.

Between June 10th and July 21st 1850, the United States Consul at Panama, Amos B. Corwine is recorded as applying the "Panama N.Y." circular datestamp on letters handled by his office. It is known with dates of only June 10th, June 23rd and July 21st.

1853 (Aug. 29) Montreal, Canada to Charleston S.C., "Montreal L.C., AU 29 1853" origin cds with manuscript "6" pence rating on 3¢ red on buff Nesbitt entire with Nesbitt seal on flap, entered U.S. mails with "Canada" framed arc handstamp and black "10" circled due rating handstamp at New York, probably carried by Southerner from New York departing Aug. 31st to Charleston arriving Sep. 3rd, docketed as received Sep. 5th; flap torn from opening, Very Fine and rare use.

1854 (Feb. 25) Charleston S.C. to John S. Cripps, Sec. of American Legation, Mexico City, Mexico, buff rebacked cover front bearing 3¢ dull red (11A), two horizontal strips of three, margins to touched except stamp at far left cut in at left, tied by four strikes of blue "Charleston S.C. '3 Paid' Feb 25" cds, endorsed "Via New Orleans", bold "Vera Cruz Mar 20 '4" cds and matching "4" reales due rating handstamp, cover repaired at left, Fine appearance.

This cover is part of a similar correspondence from Charleston S.C. addressed to the American mission led by Gen. Gadsden while he was entrusted with ending the incipient boundary dispute with Mexico.

1854 (c., Jun. 9) Charleston S.C. to Gen. Samuel Gadsen, U.S. Minister Mexico, buff cover front originally bearing 3¢ dull red (11A) single, four margins tied by blue "Charleston S.C. 'Paid' Jun 9" cds with inverted date and day slugs, then held back and additionally franked with the use of this style of Vera Cruz postmark. is uncommon and 1¢ blue (9) single, margins to slightly in, tied by blue "Charleston S.C. 'Paid' Jun 19" cds, endorsed "pr. Steamer via New Orleans", clear "Vera Cruz / Jul 10" boxed two-line datestamp and matching "4" reales due rating handstamp, Fine and intriguing item, the use of this style of Vera Cruz postmark is uncommon.

This cover is part of a correspondence addressed to Gen. Gadsden while he was entrusted with the mission of ending the incipient boundary dispute with Mexico. They are all postmarked from Gadsden's hometown of Charleston S.C. Agreement was reached in 1854 between Gadsden and General Santa Ana of Mexico, whereby 45,535 square miles of disputed territory should be ceded to the United States, in exchange for which the United States paid $10 million and further agreed to abrogate all claims for damages due to Mexican raids on the American side of the border between 1848 and 1853.

Samuel Gadsen, U.S. Minister Mexico, rebacked cover front bearing 3¢ dull red (11A) strip of four and three singles, strip with large four margins including left sheet margin, all tied by blue "Charleston 'Paid' 9 Dec" cds, endorsed "pr Str from N Orleans to Vera Cruz" at lower left, oval "Vera Cruz 17 Dic 1854" oval transit and matching "6" reales due rating; repaired corner lower right, Very Fine appearance, and a handsome usage.

Samuel Gadsen, U.S. Minister Mexico, group of four cover fronts comprising 1853 Nov. 25 Charleston use of U10 canceled by "10" handstamp; 1854 Oct. 9th Charleston S.C. with 60¢ rating and Vera Cruz "22" reales due; 1854 Dec. 1st New Orleans La. "Paid 10" and Vera Cruz "4" reales due; and 1855 Jul. 24th with blue Charleston S.C. cds ties 10¢ green (14) with Vera Cruz "4" reales due rating h.s., Fine and interesting group.

May 16" cds and matching "Havana" straightline handstamp with manuscript "20" cent due rating; top edge fault, F.-V.F., One of only 6 recorded examples in blue of this scarce Charleston S.C. "Havana" straightline.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

This Charleston "HAVANA" straightline is scarce with only nine recorded (six blue and three black). The article and census by Yamil Kouri in Chronicle 201, pp. 63-73, did not contain this example.

Reddall" at bottom left; light fold toning, F.-V.F., One of only 6 recorded examples in blue of this scarce Charleston S.C. "Havana" straightline.

This Charleston "HAVANA" straightline is scarce with only nine recorded (six blue and three black). The article and census by Yamil Kouri in Chronicle 201, pp. 63-73, did not contain this example.
