Lot 4028    

1847 Edisto Island S.C. to Charleston S.C., folded letter with bold strike of red "2" cent drop rating overstruck with "5" cent letter rating, this was probably carried in by a coastal steamer and was not a drop letter, Very Fine and unusual.

Lot 4029    

Charleston S.C. 3, bold strike of red circular postmark and matching "Paid" straightline handstamp on July 30th 1849 printed circular to Aiken S.C., subject of circular was an inquiry into "measures that have been taken in this city…for the communication of religious instruction to the slave population and free persons of color…and on the effects…".
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Lot 4030    

Charleston S.C. 3, bold strike of red circular postmark and matching "Paid" straightline handstamp on Jan. 11th 1850 printed circular to Providence R.I., Very Fine and choice.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Effective March 3, 1847, the rate for circulars not exceedingly one page was 3¢.

Lot 4031    

Charleston S.C. 1, blue circular postmark on cover to St. Andrews Parish in Charleston, some stain spots, F.-V.F., a scarce drop rate cds use.
Estimate    $100 - 150.

The Charleston 1¢ integral-rate cds is known used in only 1851-52 in red and blue ink. Of the two, the red is scarcer as the 1¢ rate was only in effect for some six weeks prior to the change from red to blue ink at the post office.

1851 (Sep. 19) Charleston S.C. to St. Johns, New Brunswick, folded letter with blue "Charleston S.C. '24' Sep 19" integral-rate cds with blue manuscript "10" cent rate updating to proper cross-border rate, St. Johns (9.26) backstamp, red "U. States" in arc framed handstamp and manuscript "6" pence due rating, Very Fine and unusual.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Lot 4033    

1852 (Oct. 15) Charleston S.C. to South Santee S.C., blue "Charleston S.C. 'Paid' Oct 15" cds ties 1¢ blue (9), four margins with sheet margin at bottom, deep rich color and strong impression, and 3¢ dull red (11A), margins to barely touched, on blue folded letter, Very Fine.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE PREPAID 1¢ WAY FEE.

This was apparently carried by a coastal vessel under contract to the Post Office. The postal laws and regulations authorized the prepayment of the 1¢ way fee, but this was seldom done.

Charleston S.C. Mar 9, blue cds with matching "Registered" framed handstamp and "Paid 6" rating handstamp on light blue cover to Rantowles S.C., additional red crayon "6c" rating; some edge staining and wear, Fine.

Charleston 'Paid' Nov 5, blue cds ties 3¢ dull red (11A), with full right imprint sheet margin, other margins to slightly irregular, additionally cancelled by manuscript cross-hatch on 1852 folded letter to St. Augustine Fla.; central file fold, F.-V.F.

Charleston S.C. 1, blue integral-rate cds cancels 3¢ red on buff Nesbitt entire addressed locally, "D. Mixer, Charleston Hotel, Charleston S.C." circular handstamp, minor edge toning, F.-V.F., This cds was usually used for circulars and unstamped drop letters. This is an unusual combination.
