Steamer Cote Joyeuse, script straightline in fancy shield handstamp with spread eagle, arrows, stars and olive branches on reverse of Mar. 20th 1845 folded cover from New Orleans addressed to James Starr at Nacogdoches, Republic of Texas, docketed "N. Orleans March 20 '45 / Recd 28th March/45", light tape stains and two file folds, F.-V.F.Milgram No. 296 Estimate $750 - 1,000.
This cover traveled on the Route 5905 New Orleans-Natchitoches. It must have gone via Natchitoches and then overland 107 miles by the post roads via Fort Jessup to Nacogdoches. This would have allowed 4 days on the Red River and an ample 4 days overland.
Dr. James Starr was appointed by Jefferson Davis as the "Trans-Mississippi Agent" effective March 12th 1864 with the duty to keep up the postal service west of the Mississippi. On orders of PMG Reagan, the Agency would consist of the "Territories west of the Mississippi" including the part of Louisiana west of the river. Although not specifically spelled out, the Indian Territories and any other Confederate controlled land west of the Mississippi were to be considered under Starr's jurisdiction. The agency continued functioning until the end of hostilities.

Red River Packet Countess, bold strike of red oval handstamp on buff cover to Shreveport bearing 3¢ dull red (26) tied by "Shreveport La." dateless cds, addressed in care of Howell & Buck and redirected within Shreveport without additional charge, endorsed "Pr Countess" at top; edge faults, Fine.Milgram No. 299 Estimate $300 - 400.
The "Countess" of 198 tons was built at Cincinnati in 1860, owned by Capt. William C. Harrison with Captain George W. Wilson as Master. It burned at Alexandria in March 1864 to avoid capture by Union forces.

No routes were contracted on the Red River after the Civil War, and all letters were carried on the river outside the posts.

Steamer Dora Martin, oval handstamp on orange buff cover to Alexandria La. bearing 3¢ rose (65), uncancelled, pencil "Received Dec 1st 1865" docketing at left; some edge wear, Fine, Illustrated in Milgram on page 229.Milgram No. 356 Estimate $200 - 300.
The Dora Martin was built in 1864 and sold on August 19th 1865 to Mary Henin of New Orleans with L.W. Martin, the previous owner, remaining as her Master. She ran Shreveport to New Orleans until 1867.

For the majority of each year, the Frolic ran on the Red River, usually to Grand Ecore. For three to six months of the year, when the water was high, she ran up towards Shreveport and entered the Loggy Bayou, Lake Bisteneau and the Dorcheat Bayou to Minden.

The "Gov. Allen" of 886 tons was built at Jeffersonville Ind. in 1867 for Capt. John Smoker for use on the Vicksburg-New Orleans trade. It was sold in November 1869 to John C. Sinnot for the Ouachita and Red River trade.
