Until the late 1830s, the Red River was navigable only to Natchitoches, the river above the town was blocked by the "Great Raft" for some 160 miles. Captain Henry Miller Shreve, Superintendent of Western Waters cleared the river allowing navigation for a further 650 miles.

Steamboat "Spartan", manuscript endorsement on folded letter datelined "New Orleans 5 Decr. 1826" and carried by the Spartan to Natchitoches where it was rated "S.B. 18¾" in purple manuscript for up to 400 miles, Very Fine.Estimate $150 - 200.
The Spartan of just 45 tons was built at Chilo Oh. in 1823 and enrolled at New Orleans in 1824. It was purchased in May 1826 by S.C. Reno who was her Master.

The "B.L. Hodge" of 289 tons built at New Albany, Indiana in 1857 for the Shreveport to New Orleans trade. John Smoker was Master in 1857 and 1858.

The "B.L. Hodge No. 2" of 699 tons was built at Louisville Ky. in 1867 operated from the spring of 1870 to June 1873 on the New Orleans to Grand Ecore route under her Master Capt. John Hienn.

The "Bart Able" of 548 tons was built at Louisville Ky. in 1864 and was enrolled at New Orleans in 1867 with Capt. W.C. Harrison as Master. In 1869, the Bart Able was running between Shreveport and New Orleans.

This advertising cachet is one of the very few promoting a freight service. The "Bart Able" was under the command of Richard Sinnott by 1870.
