Ouachita Packet Princeton, bold strike of fancy handstamp showing cotton bale on folded letter datelined "El Dorado Febr. 27th 1848" to Vicksburg via New Orleans, entered mails with "New Orleans La. Mar 4" cds and matching "Steam" and "10" rating handstamps, transferred to the New Orleans to Louisville Route 5001 that served Vicksburg at this time, file fold, Very Fine.Milgram No. 1146 Estimate $1,000 - 1,500.
This fancy "Princeton" handstamp is one of the more interesting designs depicting a cotton bale, which of course is one of the important cargoes for Lower Mississippi vessels.

(LA Independent State) Regular Ouachita Packet Twilight, blue oval handstamp on buff cover to New Orleans La. containing bill of lading datelined "Ouachita City, February 21 1861", Very Fine.Milgram No. 1392 Estimate $1,000 - 1,500.
Bill of lading accompanying goods on a steamboat were not subject to the 3¢ postage required on normal mails, even if carried out of the posts after 1854. The example here was carried on the "Twilight" after Louisiana seceded from the Union on January 24th 1861, but prior to joing the Confederacy on March 21st.

This is possibly a Confederate use, but the original enclosure not longer accompanies.
