Lot 4177    

(Route 6000m) Steamer Arkansas No. 4, red oval handstamp on folded letter datelined "Camden, Ark. March 12th 1849" to New Orleans La., black "Steam" straightline handstamp, vertical file fold, F.-V.F., Illustrated in Milgram on page 96., ex-Milgram.
Milgram No. 66    Estimate $300 - 400.

Although letters were carried on the Ouachita River in the 1820s, it was not until March 1849 that a Star Route was contracted as Route 6000m of about 600 miles. Contracts were awarded by the round trip at $5.00, resulting in a large number of steamboats recorded carrying mails.

(Route 6000m) Steamer Chalmetto, clear strike of red oval handstamp on blue folded letter datelined "Camden, Ark. March 12th 1849" to New Orleans, endorsed "Chalmetto" at bottom left, light vertical file fold, Very Fine and choice.

(Route 6000m) Steamer Cora, bold red oval handstamp on folded letter datelined "Camden Ark. Jy 13. 1848" to New Orleans La.; endorsed "Cora" at lower left, Very Fine.
Milgram No. 291    Estimate $200 - 300.

A contract route to Camden on the Ouachita River in Arkansas was not contracted until March 1849, and then only by the trip at $10. The Route 6000m was just under 600 miles and provided a weekly service from New Orleans.

(Route 6000m) Steamer Cuba, red oval handstamp on blue folded letter datelined "Ashley, Bayou Macon, July 7, 1851" to New Orleans La., endorsed "Pr. Cuba" at lower left, put onto the Cuba on its course from Camden on Route 6000m, red "New Orleans La. Jul 14" cds and matching "Way 11 Cents" rating handstamp for double the new 5¢ domestic rate plus the 1¢ way fee, Very Fine.

Derlin April" from the Carroll Hoy & Co. correspondence to New Orleans La., entered mails with red "New Orleans La. Apr 11" cds and 3¢ dull red (11A) cancelled by "Way" handstamp; endorsed "D.S. Stacey" at top left, fresh and Very Fine, ex-S.W. Richey.

(Route 6000m) Homer, red straight-line handstamp on illustrated bill of lading dated Feb. 3, 1848 from Camden Ark. to New Orleans La.; file fold, F.-V.F.
Milgram No. 612    Estimate $150 - 200.

As steamboats were contracted by the trip on Route 6000m, it is likely that the Homer, in addition to carrying freight as this Bill of Lading from Master Joseph Swagger attests, may also have carried mails.

(Route 6000m) From Steamer Storm, red oval handstamp on blue folded letter datelined "Columbia La Coldwell Parish March the 13 1852" to New Orleans La., red "New Orleans La. Mar 16" cds and matching "Way 6" rating handstamp, although Columbia was not one of the contracted offices for this route, it is likely that Storm picked mail up there, Very Fine.

(Route 8285) Per Bluff City, red straightline handstamp cancels indicia of 3¢ red Nesbitt on buff entire to New Orleans La., endorsed "pr Str Bluff City" at top left and "B/L" for bill of lading, entered mails with "New Orleans La. Feb 11 1858" and matching "Steam" straightline handstamp, Extremely Fine, ex-Clippert.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

A CHOICE EXAMPLE OF THIS SCARCE BLUFF CITY MARKING.

When contracts for Route 6000m ceased in about 1853, it was some five years before new contracts were made for Route 8285 at $50 a round trip. This letter was carried four months prior to the first contracts on Route 8285 and struck with the "Steam" straightline.

(Route 8285) Regular Ouachita Passenger Packet Steamer Dr. Buffington, oval handstamp ties 3¢ dull red (26) on orange buff homemade ladies cover from the Carroll & Hoy correspondence to New Orleans La., entered mails with "New Orleans Oct 4 1858" cds and matching "Steamboat" straightline handstamp ties 3¢, Very Fine, a wonderful exhibition item, ex-Clippert.
Milgram No. 361    Estimate $500 - 750.

This cover arrived in New Orleans four months after the beginning of Route 8285. Although the New Orleans "Steamboat" marking was struck, it is probable that this was a contract trip.
