Steamer Mary Bess, blue oval handstamp on 3¢ red buff entire with Nesbitt seal on flap, from Carroll Hoy correspondence to New Orleans La., entered mails with red "New Orleans La. Dec 7" cds and "Steam" straightline canceling indicia; small flap flaw, couple light creases, Very Fine.
Milgram No. 853    Estimate $200 - 300.

The "Mary Bess" of 206 tons was built at Louisville in 1852 for Capt. Sam Montgomery and first enrolled at Mobile. Transferred to New Orleans register in 1853 under William Kimball and D.G. Hill’s ownership.

Steamer Montgomery, inverted strike of red oval handstamp on light blue cover addressed to Ala., blue "Vicksburg Mo Feb 4" cds and matching "Steam" straightline handstamp; edge wear, F.-V.F. and scarce.

S.B. Music, red fancy oval intaglio handstamp on blue folded letter datelined in French "Nouvelle Orleans le 10 Novembre 1847" addressed to Assumption La. (later Napoleon) on the Le Forche River, endorsed "With Freight one bundle Rope, one bbl. Whiskey", Very Fine, ex-"Antoine"; with 1991 Holcombe certificate.
Milgram No. 953    Estimate $600 - 800.

Three steamboats named Music were in operation on the Mississippi between 1843 and the Civil War. Two were built for Ferdinand M. Shreck who acted as their Master. This was the first "Music" of that name of 198 tons built at Jeffersonville Ind. in 1843. This "Music" was sold to Capt. Celestin Dalferes of Assumption Parish, La and was off the lists of registered vessels by 1849.

Music, red oval handstamp on folded cover docketed "27th May 1851" to New Orleans La., endorsed "Valuable" at top, upon arrival red "Paid., F.A. Dentzel, Agt. P.O., N.O." oval handstamp struck by agent; minor ink erosion, F.-V.F.
Milgram No. 954    Estimate $300 - 400.

The second "Music" of 273 tons, like the first, was built at Jeffersonville in 1850 for Capt. Ferdinand M. Shreck who ran her on the New Orleans to Bends Trade until 1859.

From Steamer Natchez No. 2, red oval handstamp on blue folded letter datelined "Rodney Decr. 14 1850" to Philadelphia Pa., carried to New Orleans where entering the mails with red "New Orleans '10' Dec 21" integral cds and matching "Steam" straightline, fresh and Very Fine.
Milgram No. 969    Estimate $300 - 400.

The "Natchez No. 2" was owned by Thomas Leathers and was possibly running Route 6003 contracted by the single trip at 2¢ a letter carried.
