(New York) New York/Paid 3 Cts., red cds with "Circular/Paid" handstamp on 3-page printed circular & pricelist of Philip Schieffelin & Co's Extra Medicines, to North Hero, Vt., Very Fine; the circular was printed by George F. Nesbitt, manufacturer of the first U.S. postal stationery.

Dead Letter Office, "29 May 1851", sharp strike of circular handstamp with manuscript dating on blue 1849 folded letter from Abraham Bell of New York City enclosing loan and £7 draft to Syracuse N.Y., red "New York '5cts' 11 Jan" cds uprated with manuscript "7" rating, returned to sender by Dead Letter Office, Very Fine and choice dead letter mail returned after 2 years 5 months in the postal system.

(Northwest Territory) "Marietta, 11 Apl.", red manuscript postmark and matching "25" rating on folded letter to Philadelphia, Penn., endorsed "Post" and with letter dateline of "Marietta April 8, 1799"; slight ink erosion in address, a Very Fine example of this rare postmark, unlisted in red by the A.S.C.C.

(Ohio) "Cleaveland Ohio 13th. March", manuscript postmark and matching "25" rating for over 500 miles on datelined 1806 folded letter to Norwich Conn., Very Fine and choice, ex-Thomas Allen.

THE SECOND EARLIEST CLEVELAND COVER RECORDED OUTSIDE OF ARCHIVES.

The Cleveland Post Office was established October 1804. Mail from Pittsburgh, Pa. via Youngstown, Canfield, and Warren, Ohio and after October 1804 to Detroit, Mich. Population of Cleveland in 1810 was only 57 people.

The first American post office to be established on the west coast, Astoria opened on Mar. 9, 1847, and named for John Jacob Astor.
