Alpha Station, Nevada, Feb. 8, 1886, bold strike of octagonal postmark on uprated 2¢ red brown entire to Denmark, additional franked with 1881, 3¢ blue green, Very Fine.
Scott No. 207    Estimate $200 - 300.

A unique postmark which is used two days after the closure of the Alpha Post Office (This cover is mentioned in the Gamett-Paher book).

Lot 494    

"Austin, N.T., Apl 26", manuscript (type I) forwarding postmark with "Ford 3" rating on cover bearing 1861, 3¢ rose tied by blue grid with matching "Northandover Ms. Mar 23" origin cds, forwarded to San Francisco where May 10th 1864 dcds and "San Francisco Cal. 'Advertised' May 11" backstamps struck, eventually forwarded again back to Austin with ribbon "Forwarded" and "Due 6" handstamps and additional "Ford 3¢" rating; cover reduced at right, F.-V.F. and interesting use, a scarce manuscript postmark.

"Bannock, Nev. Jan 17/10", manuscript postmark ties 1908, 1¢ green on post card to Abbey Colo., Jan. 20th receiving cds, some edgewear and corner crease, F.-V.F. and rare (Gamett S/R 10).

Bannock was only open for 8 months from 5 Nov 1909 to 15 July 1910.

Battle Mountain, Nev. Oct 24, neat strike duplexed with fancy star cancel ties 1883, 2¢ red brown on 2¢ red entire cancelled by magenta "Well's Fargo & Co. Express, Austin Nev., Oct 23 1884" oval addressed to Galina Nev., printed Well's Fargo Co. frank; reduced at left and faults, Fine and rare (Gamett Rarity 10).

Carson City., U.T., blue straight line postmark with manuscript "Dec. 10" date on circa 1859 orange buff cover to Loeli, Ohio franked with manuscript cancel 1857 10¢ green type V, adhesive tied by manuscript docketing "Old Letters of G.W. Gridleys/Preserve Carefully", repeated at left, Very Fine and scarce straight line postmark; with 1981 P.F. certificate.

Carson City., U.T., blue straight line postmark with manuscript "Dec. 12th" date below and matching "Paid 10" rating on 1860 yellow cover from the Pardon Brown correspondence to Middletown, R.I., pencil docketing "Recd. the letter Jan. 15, 1861" at bottom and left; reduced slightly at left, stain, Fine and rare.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

The Pardon Brown correspondence is noted for several covers carried by Snowshoe Thompson's express from Carson Valley to Placerville during the winters of 1857-58 and 1858-1859. It has not been documented that he carried the mails during the winter of 1859-1860 that would encompass this letter.

Carson Valley, U.T., Jun .3, clear neat strike of cds (type I) on circa 1858 10¢ green on buff entire from the Pardon Brown correspondence to Middletown, N.Y.; no flap with some soiling and wear, Fine.
Scott No. U16    Estimate $500 - 750.

The Pardon Brown correspondence is noted for several covers carried by Snowshoe Thompson's express from Carson Valley to Placerville during the winters of 1857-58 and 1858-1859. This cover would have been carried by Thomason from the Carson Valley post office in his role as a Chorpenning's sub-contractor for the mails, from Carson Valley to Placerville. See the article "Across the Sierra Nevada Mountains by Snow-Shoe" by Risvold and Frajola in Chronicle 215 (Aug. 2007, p. 201-211).
