1856 (Oct. 21) New York, N.Y. to Lyon, France, blue datelined folded letter from Payen correspondence with red "New-York Br. Pkt. Oct 21" exchange cds and pencil "20" for four-times the 5¢ rate, carried as endorsed by Cunard Line Niagara from Boston Oct. 21 to Liverpool arriving Nov. 1, Calais (11.3) entry cds with manuscript "38" grams and "7f 80" rating for six-times the 13 decimes rate, Very Fine and scarce high rate cover.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

The French system progressed from two-times, four-times and six-times rates. The 38 grams was slightly more than the five-times weight and the resulting rating was six-times.

1857 (Mar. 7) New Orleans, La. to Paris, France via New York, blue New Orleans printed prices current entered mails with "New-York Br. Pkt. Mar 18" exchange cds and pencil "20" cent quadruple rating (four-times the 5¢ per ½ oz. rate), carried by Cunard Line Persia from New York Mar. 18 to Liverpool arriving Mar. 28, red London (3.30) backstamp transit and black "GB/1F60c" framed accountancy handstamp, Calais (3.30) entry cds with manuscript "38" gram weight notation for six-times weight and rated manuscript "48" decimes due (6x 8-decimes), Paris arrival backstamp; bleach spot and file fold wear, F.-V.F., a scarce six-times French rate during the three-month period.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Cunard Line Persia arrived off Liverpool on March 28, but owing to thick weather, she did not go up to Liverpool until the 29th. Her mails however, were sent in by steam tug on the evening of the 28th.

Mar 14" exchange cds and prepaid "21" cents prepaid rating for the American packet rate, carried as endorsed by Collins Line Ericsson from New York Mar. 14 to Liverpool arriving Mar. 29, red London (3.30) backstamp and "GB/40c" accountancy h.s., Calais (3.30) entry cds with "5" decimes due rating h.s., Nantes (3.31) arrival backstamp, clean and Very Fine.
