(Shades) 3¢ Copper Brown, Type II, position 82L2E, large margins except bottom cut into outer frameline only, beautiful deep distinctive color, tied by sharp strike of "New-York Sep 18" cds on 1851 folded letter to Springfield, Mass., Very Fine.
Scott No. 10A    $1,250.

The "copper brown" shade is a rich and deep color with a heavily inked impression. It resembles metallic copper and exists in 1851 printings only from plate 2 early.

(Shades) 3¢ Bright Orange Brown With Reddish & Yellowish Tints, Type II, position 85R1e, vibrant color, large margins to just touched at top, tied by perfect strike of blue grid cancel on light blue 1851 folded letter to Hagerstown, Md., matching sharp "Gettysburgh, Pa. Oct 4" cds, Extremely Fine and attractive.
Scott No. 10A    Estimate $300 - 400.

The bright orange brown has two rare sub-shades, one with a slightly reddish tinge, the other with a yellowish tinge (see Chase page 155). This stamp is intermediate in color between the two.

(Shades) 3¢ Deep Orange Brown, Type II, margins to cutting, tied by "New York Aug 22" cds with single 5½mm thick slug on blue folded letter to Towanda, Pa.; file fold affects 3¢, Fine and scarce.
Scott No. 10A    Estimate $300 - 400.

The use of the "single bar" cancellation is known only in the latter half of August 1851 for a period of sixteen days from Aug. 12 to Aug. 27. It was one of several different bar style integral cancellers used during this period in New York City.

York, N.Y., 8 Oct" route agent cds; vertical file fold at left slightly affects strip between left pair, still Very Fine and rare triple weight use, ex-Gibson, Meroni.
