Lot 2538    

Hawaii, Lahainaluna, Maui, Dec 24, 1834, dateline on large lettersheet (10½ x 16½'') with printed Lahainaluna High School broadside with a listing of the Directors, Instructors and Students, letter written by one of the teachers, Rev. Ephraim W. Clark, to his brother in Peacham, Vt., cover with red "New London, Ct., Jul 1" cds and matching straight line "Ship" handstamp, manuscript "20¾" rate; cover front toning, some separation at folds which has been reinforced and portion of sheet missing at right affecting small portion of printed border of the broadside, Fine and very rare, one of the earliest printed Hawaiian lettersheets.
Estimate    $1,500 - 2,000.

This letter was carried aboard the whaler Don Quixote which left Maui on December 25 and arrived in New London, Ct. on July 1st, 1835 where this letter enter the mails on the same day.

Hawaii, Negative "L" in Circle (Gregory Lett L-15), Gregory 1RRR, fine strike ties 1864, 2¢ rose vermilion, on orange cover to Rev. S.E. Bishop at Lahainaluna, Maui, docketed at right "H.H. Parker, July 8/71" in pencil; opened at right, F.-V.F., An exceptionally rare cancel.

Hawaii, Peninsula, Oahu, part strike of violet postmark (MH 255.01, Rarity 1RRR) on fresh 1897, 1¢ red postal card to Honolulu, receiving postmark, Fine, still a very rare Oahu town postmark.

Hawaii, "Waimea, Aug 7" (Davey 803), Gregory 1R, manuscript postmark along with squared grid ties 1864, 2¢ rose vermilion, on cover to Rev. S.E. Bishop at Lahainaluna, Maui, docketed as from "Lizzie Lyons" in pencil; opened at left, clean and Very Fine.
Scott No. 31    Estimate $600 - 800.

The Postmasters of Waimea were Rev. Lorenzo Lyons (1858-1886) and Miss E. W. Lyons (1886-1900). Parker Ranch was headquartered nearby and the town was also site of the mission run by Lorenzo Lyons. Lizzie was his wife.
