1858 (Jan. 5) St. Louis, Mo. to Couvet, Switzerland, folded cover with "Saint Louis Mo. Jan 6 1858" cds and red "Paid 35" oval datestamp, red "New-York Am. Pkt. Jan 9" exchange backstamp with matching "12" cent credit h.s., carried by Havre Line Arago from New York Jan. 9th to Southampton arriving Jan. 21st, Bern (1.26) backstamp and red "6" kreuzer due that was crossed out as fully prepaid, Very Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

The St. Louis red oval "35" marking is one of a set of different value markings used at St. Louis and an uncommon marking.

1874 (Jun. 27) New York, N.Y. to Neuchatel, Switzerland, folded cover bearing two 1873, 10¢ brown singles for double rate, rich color, tied by NYFM circle of wedges and red "New York Paid All Via Eng. & Ostd. Jan 27" exchange cds, carried by NGL Line Mosel from New York Jun. 27 to Southampton arriving Jul. 8, Basel (7.10) and Neuchatel (7.10) backstamps; Extremely Fine.

In July 1872, a new postal convention with Switzerland provided for closed mails via Bremen or Hamburg. To differentiate between this convention and the 1870 convention which was for closed mails via England, New York created a series of new circular datestamps. This is one of two different marking showing the desired routing through England and Belgium, "VIA ENG. & OSTD".

1874 (Jul. 14) Dillon, Ill. to Meilen, Switzerland, cover bearing 1870, 6¢ carmine cancelled by manuscript with matching "Dillon Ills, July 14" postmark, underpaid 10¢ rate, black "New York Via England & Ostend Jul 18" exchange cds with matching "Insufficiently Paid" straightline and blue crayon "20", reverse with Basel, Zurich (7.31) and Meilen (7.31) backstamps, red crayon "40" centimes due rating, Very Fine.
Scott No. 148    Estimate $200 - 300.

This is second type of New York circular datestamp showing routing by closed mail via England and Belgium, this time "ENGLAND & OSTEND" spelled in full and "PAID ALL" omitted. Letter insufficiently paid 4¢ so New York marked 20 centimes short paid in blue crayon (1¢ = 5 centimes). Basel marked the VIA OSTENDE route and postage due was 40 centimes, which included a 20 centimes insufficiently paid letter fine.
