Lot 1827    

Confederacy, Mobile, Ala., 1861, 5¢ blue, clear to large margins, tied by "Mobile, Ala., Nov 11, 1861" cds on cover to Montgomery, Ala., with original enclosure datelined "Camp Goode, Nov 10th, 1861" to Confederate Congressional representative John P. Morgan, mentions the practice firing of the ironclad steamer CSS Mississippi; few small cover erosion holes, one affecting postmark, otherwise Very Fine, accompanied by transcript and historical background.

Lot 1828    

Confederacy, Mobile, Ala., 1861, 5¢ blue (affixed upside down with large margins to just barely touching at lower left) tied by the Mobile, Ala./Oct. 12, 1861 double circle postmark on cover addressed to Miss Lewis Care of Maj Gen Jno L. Lewis, New Orleans, La., endorsed at left in the same handwriting as the address "Lieut A. J. Lewis La Infy.", cover reduced at the left and shows just a little overall light foxing, otherwise Very Fine.

John L. Lewis was not a regular CSA General Officer. At the start of the war, he was in command of a division of Louisiana State Troops (militia). The sender was his son who at this time was a Lieut in Co D 1st La Inf. This unit had been sent to reinforce the defenses at Pensacola, Fla.

Confederacy, Montgomery, Ala., 1861, 10¢ red, handstamp provisional with the Montgomery, Ala./Jul. 2, 1861 cds on cover addressed to Capt Jno. W.A. Sanford, Norfolk, Va. cover is complete with just a little light foxing at the bottom center, otherwise Very Fine, ex-Hart.

Confederacy, Nashville, Tenn., 1861, 5¢ violet brown, large margins except just touching frameline at bottom, tied by blue "Nashville, Ten./Sep. 23, 1861" cds with matching "PAID" handstamp on cover to "Col. T. H. Logwood, Care of Genl. Pillow, Memphis Tenn." with directions to forward at Memphis, flap torn, Very Fine and attractive, Rich with military history as well as a great provisional use., ex-Green & Walske; with 1986 C.S.A. certificate.

Lieutenant Colonel Thomas H. Logwood commanded "Logwood's Battalion" of 6th Tennessee Cavalry which merged into the 7th Tennessee Cavalry - later also 15th and 16th - Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest's command. General Gideon Johnson Pillow (1806-1878) military bio included.

(1861) circular datestamps on light buff cover to Helena Ark., slightly reduced on the diagonal at right, still an Extremely Fine pair and attractive cover, ex-Kilbourne, with 1999 P.F. certificate.

Jun. 18, 1861" riverfront post office double-circle datestamp on buff cover to Vicksburg Miss., natural paper wrinkle in cover, stamp and cover with tiny manuscript ink spots, Very Fine and attractive, ex-Caspary & Everett; with 2006 P.F. certificate.
