Union Soldier's Letter & Patriotic Cover, from Leroy Stone, 4th Vermont Infantry, datelined Camp Griffin (6 miles from Washington), October 14, 1861, talks of troop movements and fellow Vermont soldiers; terrific patriotic cover and franked with 3¢ rose postmarked Washington, D.C. transcription accompanies, F.-V.F.

Lot 1659    

Union Soldier's Letters, two 1865 letters datelined Jenkins Island, S.C., April 27th, 1863, from Private Gilson Mendall to his wife, postmarked Apr 28, Port Royal S.C. on small patriotic cover with poem "To A Wife" printed by J.A. Howells; mostly family news but some interesting content: "The plantation owners have all either been killed or they have abandoned their houses and slaves have taken them over…the slaves wrecked most of the abandoned plantations, and we did little to stop them. They are very happy to see us." And finally, "Be sure to destroy my letters so that they don't fall in the hands of the enemy spies". With transcriptions, photo, battle maps and 7-page write up on Mendall and the battle., F.-V.F.

Lot 1660    

Union Sympathizer Letter from Kentucky, datelined Louisville, September 24th, 1861, written as he flees his home to avoid being caught between the withdrawing Confederate troops and the Union troops swooping through Kentucky shortly after the start the war; with Confederate sympathies in the rural and southern parts of Kentucky, the Kentucky government passed an act of secession for those areas only, causing considerable disruption to the citizens and ill will within the state, which this letter expresses; transcription accompanies, with patriotic cover picturing Southern gentleman under palmetto tree and verses such as "Oh! for a nigger, and oh! for a whip", F.-V.F.

Civil War Soldiers' Letters, 1862-1865, album with about 46 letters, most with envelopes, a few patriotic, virtually all transcribed for easy reading; contents with the usual health and weather reports, but most with interesting commentary about camp life and some battle reports, much personal news and statements of loneliness, etc; datelines include 1861 Camp Wood, Ky., Camp Big Spring, Corinth, Miss., Sherbunn Barracks, Fort Corcoran, Va., Demopolis, Ala., Wisewell Barracks, Washington, D.C., Murfreesboro, Harpers Ferry, Chattannooga, Quincy Hospital, Ill., Naval Combat off Ft. Wright; and much more; condition somewhat mixed; still an engaging & fascinating correspondence of some historical value (no photo).
