Although the San Francisco Mint coined 636,445 double eagles in 1859, their production of ten dollar pieces was far less generous. Only 7,000 eagles were minted, and those all went into circulation, since none have been certified as Mint State by either major service. The surviving population is estimated at 40 to 60 examples.
