The First Women's Air Derby was a transcontinental race that began in Santa Monica, California, and culminated in Cleveland, Ohio, for the 1929 Cleveland National Air Races. Both Amelia Earhart and Blanche Noyes participated in this event.

The Republic of Panama had anticipated dispatching mail on the return flight (pilot Lindbergh), however this was precluded by the contract between PAA and the U.S. Post Office. As a courtesy, PAA carried Panama mail in a second plane. This flight was criticized and became known as the "Outlaw Flight".
