The sender intended this letter to go by the Bremen mail at the 20¢ rate. Since the letter was unpaid and a week early for the Bremen steamer, the clerk in New York sent this letter by Prussian closed mail.

Folded letter sheet with blue "Philadelphia, Pa., Nov 5" cds and red "Phila. 5cts Paid" octagon handstamp with manuscript "20" over handstamp rate, straight line "Paid Part" handstamp and reverse with red "New York, Nov 5" cds; small cover tear at top, still Very Fine and choice, a scarce uprating of the Philadelphia octagon rate handstamp.Estimate $400 - 600.
The "Paid Part" handstamp is a New York marking indicating that the letter was prepaid only to Bremen. Nothing was due since delivery was at this port. Sent per Ocean Line - Washington, departing New York on January 31, 1853 and arrived on Bremen on February 16th.
