Unfortunately on the evening of Sunday, January 6, 1901 the poor visibility and bad weather caused the confusion between two lighthouses (Faraman and Planier) and the packetboat Russie was wrecked on the beach just west of Marseille. The ship ran aground at four hundred yards from the shore but the bad sea conditions permitted its approach for five long days.
