Lot 2589

1870 Indian Head Cent. Freckles of delicate reddish-tan run over the cherry-orange surfaces. Well but not fully struck, with the usual softness seen in some of the feather tips and the reverse shield. A shallow "N" in "ONE" is a characteristic of the reverse hub in use from 1864-early 1870, and not due to a weak strike. The surfaces are pristine, save for some minor flecks and a small graze through the "I" in "UNITED". The entire obverse legend is recut, and signs of die clashing are seen, with an obvious impression from the "C" in "CENT" in the left obverse field. Population: 72 in 64 Red, 33 finer (8/09)., PCGS graded MS-64 Red.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

Lot 2592

1872 Indian Head Cent. Bold "N" in "ONE". This issue's original mintage of 4 million pieces is modest by the standards of the Indian cent series. Furthermore, there were few collectors in the United States at the time who cared about preserving pristine Indian cents. These factors combine to explain the high grade rarity of the 1872 today. This is a lovely Gem with rich greenish-brown toning over glossy, partially lustrous features. The surfaces are free of most trivial distractions, and the strike is bold, if not sharp in all areas., NGC graded MS-65 Red & Brown.
Estimate    $2,000 - 3,000.

Realized: $2,000

Lot 2594

1873 Indian Head Cent. Doubled "LIBERTY", Closed "3". Snow-1b. FS-101, formerly FS-009. A rare and highly collectible doubled die cent. This is an example of pivoted hub doubling with the pivot at 6 o'clock. The most noticeable effect of this doubling is the spread between the letters of "LIBERTY" on the headband. The surfaces show even brown patina, and the only surface flaws of note are numerous abrasions that are peppered over both obverse and reverse, PCGS graded EF-40.
Estimate    $2,000 - 3,000.

Realized: $1,900
